Can diabetics take Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion)?
Yes, people with diabetes typically can take Contrave® for weight loss. If you are taking a diabetes medication that puts you at risk for having low blood sugar levels (such as insulin, glipizide, glyburide, etc.), your doctor may need to adjust that medication’s dose or ask you to more closely monitor your blood sugar levels. This is because Contrave reduces appetite, so when you eat less (especially fewer carbohydrates) your blood sugar levels likely will not go as high. When considering whether or not you are a candidate for Contrave, your doctor will review if you have any contraindications to this medication and how the medication might interact with medications you are already taking. Contraindications to Contrave include, but are not limited to, a history of seizures (epilepsy), use of certain medications including opiates (such as oxycodone and morphine), and uncontrolled high blood pressure.
