How long can you stay on Mounjaro (tirzepatide)?
Mounjaro® is an FDA-approved medication for type 2 diabetes and is intended for long-term use. It is not recommended to stop taking Mounjaro once you have improved your blood sugar (glucose) levels or hemoglobin A1c. This is because type 2 diabetes is considered a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment. So long as a patient is tolerating Mounjaro, it is recommended they continue with the medication. That being said, use of Mounjaro may significantly improve blood sugar levels such that other diabetes medications you may be already taking prior to starting Mounjaro are no longer needed. Talk to your medical provider about all medications you are taking before starting Mounjaro or if you are having side effects from the medication.
In some cases, Mounjaro is used off-label for weight loss in patients with a body mass index of 30+ kg/m2 or 27+ kg/m2 and weight-related medical problems. While it may help a person lose weight, if the medication is stopped, it is very likely they will regain weight. This is because, like diabetes, obesity is a chronic disease requiring lifelong treatment. Research has shown that after we lose weight, our metabolism slows down and hunger hormones increase leading to weight regain. As Mounjaro has the effect of suppressing appetite, it will oppose these hunger signals and therefore help one maintain the weight they have lost.
